Founder of Big Machine Records, known for discovering and promoting country music stars like Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts. He's a pioneer in the music industry, shaping the sound of modern country music.
Scott Borchetta is a renowned American record executive, best known as the founder of the Big Machine Label Group, which he established in 2005 with Taylor Swift as its first signed artist. Under his leadership, the label has become a powerhouse in the music industry, with a roster of successful artists and a reputation for innovative marketing and artist development.
Born on July 3, 1962, in Burbank, California, Borchetta grew up in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California in the 1970s. His father, Mike Borchetta, worked in record promotions for several Los Angeles record labels, including Capitol Records, RCA Records, and Mercury Records. This exposure to the music industry from a young age sparked Borchetta's interest in pursuing a career in music.
After playing in several rock bands, Borchetta moved to Nashville with his father, where he played bass in a country band and worked in his father's mail room promoting country singles. This early experience taught him about the music industry and its operations, which he would later use to pursue jobs at record labels.
In 1985, Borchetta landed a job at MTM Records, where he stayed for three years. He then spent two years working as an independent promoter before joining MCA Nashville Records and later DreamWorks Nashville. His experience in promotion and artist development at these labels laid the foundation for his future success.
In 2005, Borchetta founded Big Machine Label Group, which quickly gained momentum with Taylor Swift as its flagship artist. The label's innovative approach to marketing and artist development led to Swift's rapid rise to superstardom, and the label's subsequent success.
Borchetta is also a passionate philanthropist, supporting various charitable organizations, including the Country Music Association Foundation, which provides music education programs for students. Additionally, he is an avid sports car racing driver, competing in the Trans-Am Series, and owner of the NASCAR Xfinity Series team, Big Machine Racing.
Borchetta has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the music industry, including the Country Music Association's (CMA) Award for Label of the Year, the Academy of Country Music's (ACM) Award for Record Label of the Year, and the Music Business Association's (Music Biz) Award for Independent Label of the Year.
Under Borchetta's leadership, Big Machine Label Group has been instrumental in shaping the country music landscape, launching the careers of artists like Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, and Reba McEntire. The label's innovative approach to marketing and artist development has inspired a new generation of music executives and artists.
In 2015, Borchetta became an in-house mentor on American Idol, serving as a judge and industry expert during the show's 14th and 15th seasons. This role allowed him to share his expertise with a wider audience and provide guidance to aspiring artists.
Scott Borchetta's vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and dedication to the music industry have made him a respected figure in the entertainment world. As the founder of Big Machine Label Group, he continues to shape the music landscape, discover new talent, and inspire future generations of music professionals.
