A legendary guitarist and songwriter, best known for his work with Thin Lizzy, creating iconic rock anthems and riffs that still inspire generations of musicians.
Scott Gorham is renowned for his iconic guitar riffs and songwriting skills as one of the twin lead guitarists of the Irish rock band Thin Lizzy. With a career spanning over four decades, Gorham has been an integral part of the band's critically acclaimed period, shaping Thin Lizzy's signature twin lead guitar style.
Born on March 17, 1951, in Glendale, California, Gorham began his musical journey at the tender age of 13, learning to play the bass guitar. He joined several local teenage bands, including The Jesters, Mudd, and The Ilford Subway, before switching to guitar after the tragic death of his friend and guitarist, Steve Schrage, in 1968.
Gorham joined Thin Lizzy in 1974, following an audition, and remained with the band until its breakup in 1983. Alongside guitarist Brian Robertson, he developed Thin Lizzy's distinctive twin lead guitar style, contributing dual backing vocals as well. During this period, the band released some of its most critically acclaimed albums, including Jailbreak, Johnny the Fox, and Bad Reputation.
In 1996, Gorham reunited with Thin Lizzy, performing with the band on guitar and backing vocals. He has since assembled various lineups, following the death of band leader Phil Lynott in 1986. In 2012, Gorham co-founded the Thin Lizzy spinoff band Black Star Riders, showcasing new material. However, he left Black Star Riders in 2021 to focus on Thin Lizzy.
Gorham's contributions to Thin Lizzy's music and style have been instrumental in shaping the band's legacy. His guitar work and songwriting skills have influenced numerous rock bands, including Def Leppard, Metallica, and Guns N' Roses. Thin Lizzy's music has also been covered by various artists, including Iron Maiden, Saxon, and U2.
Gorham has been inducted into the Kerrang! Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Thin Lizzy in 2006. He has also received the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award for Inspiration in 2011.
Gorham has been open about his struggles with addiction and depression, using his experiences to raise awareness and support for mental health issues. In 2014, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Dublin for his contributions to music and philanthropy.
