Born on August 30, 1979, Richmond grew up in a family that didn't have a strong baseball tradition. In fact, his high school didn't even offer baseball as a sport. Undeterred, he played amateur summer baseball throughout western Canada, supporting himself by working on the Vancouver dockyards.
Richmond's determination and passion for the game led him to pursue higher education, enrolling in Missouri Valley College for one year. He later transferred to Bossier Parish Community College in Louisiana for another year, playing for the schools' NAIA-level baseball teams. Finally, he landed at Oklahoma State University, where he earned an honorable mention All-Star in the Big 12 conference for the Cowboys in 2005.
Despite going undrafted after college due to his age, Richmond refused to give up on his dreams. He joined the independent Northern League, playing for the Edmonton CrackerCats (now known as the Edmonton Capitals). Initially, he struggled in his first season, but he persisted, working on his craft and improving his game.
In 2006, Richmond's hard work paid off, as he posted an impressive 3.03 ERA, striking out 72 while walking only 17 in 71.1 innings, and allowing just 53 hits. He led Edmonton in ERA and would have ranked fourth in the Northern League if he had qualified with enough innings pitched.
The following year, Richmond moved to the starting rotation, where he excelled, earning a 10-9 record and a 4.26 ERA. He led his team in wins and was named the pitcher of the year for Edmonton, ultimately catching the attention of MLB scouts.
In October 2007, Richmond signed a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays after impressing scouts in an open tryout. He made his MLB debut on July 30, 2008, starting against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Throughout his MLB career, Richmond played for the Blue Jays from 2008 to 2012, appearing in 36 games, including 29 starts. He posted a 9-14 record with a 5.27 ERA, striking out 137 batters in 155.2 innings.
