Monahan's junior career took off with the Mississauga Rebels, where he captained the team to an OHL Cup title in 2010 and was named the tournament's most valuable player. He finished the 2009-2010 season with an impressive 46 goals and 40 assists in 47 games, earning him a first-round draft pick (16th overall) by the Ottawa 67s in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection draft.
