Born on February 5, 1986, in Sydney, Australia, to Tongan parents, Kepu's love for rugby was ignited at a young age. He began playing rugby with Tamaki Rugby Football Club Under 7s in Auckland, New Zealand, where his family relocated when he was just a youngster. Kepu's talent and dedication earned him a spot as captain of the Wesley College first XV in 2004, before switching to the front row with the New Zealand under-19s in 2005.
Kepu's impressive performance at the under-19 level saw him represent New Zealand at under-17, 19, and 21 levels. In 2005, he was part of the wider training group for the Chiefs, and went on to become a standout player for Counties Manukau in the Air New Zealand Cup in 2006. Although a broken collarbone ended his 2007 season, Kepu's determination saw him move back to Sydney at the age of 21 to play for the NSW Waratahs.
Kepu made his Super Rugby debut on March 1, 2008, against the Highlanders in Dunedin, playing as the starting loosehead prop. His impressive performance earned him a spot in the Australian A team for the 2008 Pacific Nations Cup. Later that year, Kepu made his test debut for the Wallabies on November 8, 2008, against Italy at Padova, marking the beginning of his illustrious international career.
