Sela Ward is an American actress best known for her iconic roles in TV dramas, including Teddy Reed in Sisters and Lily Manning in Once and Again, earning her two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award.
Born on July 11, 1956, in Meridian, Mississippi, Ward grew up in a family of four children with her parents, Annie Kate and Granberry Holland G.H. Ward, Jr. Her father was an electrical engineer, and her mother was a homemaker. Ward attended Lamar School in Meridian and later enrolled at the University of Alabama, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen, was a Crimson Tide cheerleader, and joined Chi Omega sorority. She double-majored in fine art and advertising, graduating in 1977.
Ward began her career as a storyboard artist for multimedia presentations in New York City. To supplement her income, she started modeling, which led to her being recruited by the Wilhelmina agency. She soon appeared in TV commercials, including a notable campaign for Maybelline cosmetics.
Her breakthrough role came when she played Teddy Reed in the NBC drama series Sisters (1991-1996), earning her first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1994. She went on to star as Lily Manning in the ABC drama series Once and Again (1999-2002), winning her second Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama.
Ward has also had recurring roles in popular TV shows, including Stacy Warner in the Fox medical drama House, Jo Danville in the CBS police procedural CSI: NY (2010-2013), and Dana Mosier in the CBS police procedural series FBI (2018-2019).
Ward has appeared in a range of films, including The Man Who Loved Women (1983), Rustlers Rhapsody (1985), Nothing in Common (1986), Hello Again (1987), The Fugitive (1993), My Fellow Americans (1996), The Badge (2002), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), The Guardian (2006), The Stepfather (2009), Gone Girl (2014), and Independence Day: Resurgence (2016).
Ward has been married to Howard Sherman, a venture capitalist, since 1992. They have two children, Austin and Anabella.
