As a junior, he excelled in mountain bike racing, winning three national titles at the Collegiate championships in XC and Short Track in 2014 and 2015. During his time at the University of Colorado Boulder, Kuss's cycling ambitions were modest, aiming to take his passion as far as possible after completing his degree.
Kuss' breakthrough came in 2016, when he rode for the amateur Gateway Harley Davidson/Trek team. His maiden victory was a summit finish stage win at the Redlands Bicycle Classic. He finished fourth at the Mogollon stage at the Tour of the Gila, a UCI 2.2 stage race. A stint with Rally Cycling in 2016 and 2017 led to a two-year contract with LottoNL-Jumbo in 2018.
In 2018, Kuss secured three stage wins and the general classification at the Tour of Utah. His grand tour debut came at the 2018 Vuelta a España, followed by the 2019 Giro d'Italia. At the 2019 Vuelta a España, he claimed his first grand tour stage win, launching a solo attack from the day's breakaway with 7 kilometers to go. Kuss finished 15th overall in the 2020 Tour de France, the highest overall placing for an American since Andrew Talansky in 2015.
In 2021, Kuss won stage 15 of the Tour de France after breaking away with 5 km to go to up the final climb of the day, the Col de Beixalis.
