Seth, born Gregory Gallant on September 16, 1962, is a Canadian cartoonist renowned for his nostalgic and introspective work, particularly his critically acclaimed series Palookaville and mock-autobiographical graphic novel It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken (1996).
Seth was born in Clinton, Ontario, Canada, to John Henry Gallant and Violet Daisy Gallant (née Wilkinson). He was the youngest of five children, and his family frequently moved, eventually settling in Strathroy, Ontario, which he considers his hometown. Seth's introverted nature and lack of athletic prowess led him to find solace in comic books and drawing at a young age.
He attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto from 1980 to 1983, where he became immersed in the punk subculture, adopting an unconventional style, including bleached hair, makeup, and outlandish clothing. During this period, he adopted the pen name "Seth" in 1982.
Seth's breakthrough came in 1985 when he took over art duties from the Hernandez brothers for Mister X, a comic book series published by Vortex Comics. His run spanned issues 6-13 (1985-1988), after which he ventured into commercial artwork for publications like Saturday Night and Fashion.
In 1986, Seth met fellow Toronto-based Vortex artist Chester Brown, and in 1991, he befriended American cartoonist Joe Matt. The trio became known for their confessional autobiographical comics in the early 1990s, frequently depicting each other in their works.
In April 1991, Seth launched his own comic book series, Palookaville, with Montreal publisher Drawn & Quarterly. This series has become a testament to his unique style, inspired by the classic cartoons of The New Yorker.
