Shakeel Badayuni was born on August 3, 1916, in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father, Mohammed Jamaal Ahmed Sokhta Qadiri, encouraged his education and arranged for tuition in Arabic, Urdu, Persian, and Hindi at home.
Badayuni's inclination towards poetry was not hereditary, but he was inspired by his distant relative, Ziaul Qadiri Badayuni, a religious shayar. The contemporary environment of Badayun and his participation in intercollege and interuniversity mushairas (poetry recitation symposiums) further kindled his passion for poetry.
In 1940, Badayuni married Salma, his distant relative, and moved to Delhi as a supply officer. However, he continued to participate in mushairas, earning fame nationwide for his romantic and emotive poetry.
In 1944, Badayuni shifted to Bombay to write songs for films. He met film producer A.R. Kardar and music composer Naushad Ali, who were impressed by his poetic skills. Badayuni's first film song, "Hum Dard Ka Afsana Duniya Ko Suna Denge," in the film Dard (1947), marked the beginning of his illustrious career in the film industry.
Badayuni received numerous awards and nominations for his contributions to Urdu poetry and film lyrics. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist for "Chaudhvin Ka Chand Ho" in the film Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) and "Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil" in the film Bees Saal Baad (1962).
