Grant was born on August 28, 1988, in Petersburg, Virginia. She attended the Appomattox Regional Governors School For the Arts and Technology for a year before transferring to the Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland. During her time at the Baltimore School, she was recognized as a YoungArts Winner in Theater and a Presidential Scholar in the Arts.
In 2007, Grant received a scholarship to attend the prestigious Juilliard School, where she graduated with a B.F.A. in Drama in 2010.
Grant's early theater work includes productions with The Public Theater, such as Measure for Measure, The Winter's Tale, and The Merchant of Venice. She originated the role of Cassandra in Christopher Durang's comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which premiered at the McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, New Jersey, in 2012.
Her performance as Cassandra earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 2013. The play went on to win the Tony for Best Play, as well as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. Grant also won the 2013 Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut.
