Born on February 2, 1979, in Mumbai, Shamita belongs to a Tulu-speaking Bunt family. Her late father, Surendra Shetty, and mother, Sunanda, were manufacturers of tamper-proof water caps in the pharmaceutical industry. Shamita's elder sister, Shilpa Shetty, is a well-known actress in her own right.
Shamita completed her schooling from St. Anthony's Girls High School, Mumbai, and later pursued a degree in commerce from Sydenham College. She then went on to do a fashion designing diploma from SNDT College, Mumbai, where she was discovered by the renowned fashion designer, Manish Malhotra. Malhotra saw potential in her and encouraged her to explore an acting career.
