Born on 19 January 1982 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, Tronc was bred from a family with a strong rugby league heritage. His father, James Tronc, played for the Redcliffe Dolphins and the Souths Magpies in the BRL Premiership, while his relative, Scott Tronc, was a Queensland state of Origin forward.
Tronc's own rugby league journey began during his high school days at Wavell State High School, where he was selected to play for the Australian Schoolboys team in 1999.
After a stint with the Redcliffe Dolphins, Tronc joined the North Queensland Cowboys, where he played at prop forward in the 2005 NRL Grand Final, the Cowboys' first, against the Wests Tigers.
During his time with the Cowboys, Tronc suffered a knee injury in 2007, which required reconstructive surgery and ruled him out for the rest of the season. This setback didn't deter him, as he later signed a two-year deal with the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in the Super League.
After asking for a release from the Wildcats, Tronc returned to Australia, signing with the Brisbane Broncos until the end of 2010. However, in July 2011, he was forced into premature retirement due to a debilitating neck injury.
