Early Life and Career

Wooley was born in Erick, Oklahoma, to William C. Wooley and Ora E. Wooley, with Cherokee ancestry. Growing up on a farm, he became an accomplished rodeo rider and working cowboy, learning to ride horses at an early age. After trying to enlist in the military during World War II but being rejected due to rodeo injuries, Wooley worked in the oil industry and as a welder. He eventually moved to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1946, where he pursued a career as a country-western musician, recording songs and traveling with a band throughout the South and Southwest.
