Born Sherry Lee Duhl on July 31, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, Lansing's early life was marked by her mother's courageous escape from Nazi Germany in 1937. After her father's passing when she was nine, her mother remarried Norton S. Lansing, and the family was raised in a Jewish household.
Lansing attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and graduated in 1962. She then earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Northwestern University in 1966, graduating cum laude and becoming a member of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority.
Lansing's journey in the film industry began as a mathematics teacher, but she soon transitioned to acting, appearing in films like Loving (1970) and Rio Lobo (1970), as well as television shows. Lansing took a job as head script reader at MGM, followed by a role as VP of Production at Columbia Pictures, where she oversaw the highly successful films The China Syndrome (1979) and Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). Her work at Columbia Pictures led to her appointment as the first female production president of a major studio at 20th Century Fox in 1980, at the age of 35.
In 1992, Lansing became the Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, a position she held until her retirement in 2005. During her tenure, she oversaw the production of several blockbuster films, including
