Born on August 3, 1947, in the remote village of Siddaramanahundi in Varuna Hobli, Mysore district, Siddaramaiah hails from a farming family. He was the fourth among six siblings and belongs to the Kuruba Gowda community.
He studied at Mount Carmel School and later pursued his high school education from Vidyavardhaka High School, managed by Vidyavardhaka Sangha VVS, Mysuru. Siddaramaiah went on to earn his B. Sc. and LL.B. degrees from Mysore University.
Siddaramaiah's foray into politics began as a junior under the renowned lawyer, P M Chikkaboraiah, in Mysore. He later taught law at Vidyavardhaka Law College, managed by Vidyavardhaka Sangha VVS, Mysuru.
He has served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka twice, from 1996 to 1999 and from 2004 to 2005, during his tenure in the Janata Dal and Janata Dal Secular. Siddaramaiah has also held the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly twice, from 2019 to 2023 and from 2009 to 2013.
Siddaramaiah's first stint as the Chief Minister of Karnataka began in 2013 and lasted until 2018. During this period, he implemented several initiatives aimed at rural development, infrastructure growth, and social welfare.

Siddaramaiah is married to Parvathi and has two sons, Rakesh and Yathindra. Unfortunately, his elder son, Rakesh, passed away in 2016 at the age of 38 due to multiple organ failure.
