The French driver has made a name for himself as a champion in both sports car racing and IndyCar, culminating in his historic win at the 2019 Indianapolis 500.
Born on May 18, 1984, in Montmorillon, France, Pagenaud grew up with a passion for racing. Before pursuing his dream, he worked at his family's supermarket, eventually managing the video game department. After attending business school, he returned to the supermarket, but his family's establishment of a driving school provided the funds for him to begin his racing career.
Pagenaud began his racing career in 2002, competing in the French Formula Renault and Formula Renault Eurocup. He then moved up to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2005, finishing 16th. In 2006, he made the move to the United States, winning the Champ Car Atlantic with Team Australia in his rookie season.
The Champ Car Atlantic championship earned Pagenaud a $2 million award to apply towards a ride in Champ Car in 2007. He stayed with Team Australia, moving up to the Champ Car program, and finished 8th in the points standings in his debut season. After the demise of the Champ Car World Series, Pagenaud moved to the American Le Mans Series in 2008, codriving the De Ferran Motorsports Acura ARX01b LMP2.
In 2012, Pagenaud made the switch to the IndyCar Series, driving for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. He secured his first IndyCar win in 2013 and went on to win the championship in 2016. The pinnacle of his career came in 2019, when he became the first French driver to win the Indianapolis 500 since Gaston Chevrolet in 1920.
When not behind the wheel, Pagenaud is an avid cyclist and enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is also involved in various charitable initiatives, including the IndyCar-themed "More Than Pink" campaign, which supports breast cancer research and awareness.
Sigma Pagenaud's impressive career has left an indelible mark on the world of racing.
