Poulsen's football career began at an early age, starting out at Ulkebol and SUB Snderborg. He then joined Haderslev Fodboldklub, which later changed its name to HFK Snderjylland and eventually SnderjyskE.
At HFK Snderjylland, Poulsen balanced his football career with school, earning the title of junior player of the year.
