Born on November 10, 1956, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Sinbad was the son of Louise and Dr. Donald Beckley Adkins Sr., a Baptist minister. He has five siblings and was raised in a family with Irish descent on his paternal grandmother's side. Sinbad attended Benton Harbor High School and graduated in 1974, later attending the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, from 1974 to 1978, where he played basketball for two seasons.
After college, Sinbad served in the United States Air Force as a boom operator aboard KC-135 Stratotankers. During his military service, he would often travel to perform stand-up comedy in downtown Wichita, Kansas. In 1981, he competed as a comedian/MC in the Air Force's Talent Contest.
