Born Clarence Edward Mauldin on November 3, 1940, in Smithville, Texas, Rhodes was orphaned as an infant and adopted by sharecroppers Leroy and Julia Smith. The young Rhodes was smitten, and by age 12, he was hooked on the blues, crediting his uncle as his primary source of inspiration.
Rhodes began performing in local blues clubs in Smithville and nearby Austin in the late 1950s, while still in his teens. His influences were far-reaching, with legendary guitarists L.C. Robinson, Pee Wee Crayton, and B.B. King, as well as singer Percy Mayfield, shaping his unique sound. After high school, Rhodes joined the Navy, where he honed his craft and worked as a radio DJ, spinning country and blues records for sailors.
Rhodes' first single, "I'll Never Let You Go When Something Is Wrong," was released on Domino Records in 1958. He went on to record numerous singles, including "I Don't Love You No More" in 1966, and eventually signed with Galaxy Records in Oakland. His prolific output earned him 15 Blues Music Award nominations, with a win in the Instrumentalist – Other category in 2011.
