A trailblazing electronic music artist, known for blending pop sensibilities with underground club styles, and pushing boundaries of gender identity and self-expression through music and visuals.
Sophie, known mononymously as SOPHIE, is a Scottish music producer, songwriter, and DJ renowned for her bold and experimental approach to pop music. Her work is characterized by sugary synthesized textures, incorporation of underground dance styles, and pioneer of the 2010s hyperpop microgenre.
Sophie was born on 17 September 1986 in Glasgow, Scotland. Raised by a father with a keen ear for music, Sophie was introduced to electronic music at a young age, attending raves and listening to rave cassette tapes. At around nine or ten, she expressed her desire to drop out of school to pursue a career in music.
Sophie's breakthrough singles, "Bipp" (2013) and "Lemonade" (2014), showcased her unique sound and propelled her to international recognition. These singles were later compiled on the singles collection "Product" (2015). Her studio album "Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides" (2018) earned a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
Sophie worked closely with artists from the PC Music label, including A. G. Cook and GFOTY. She also produced tracks for notable acts such as Charli XCX, Vince Staples, Kim Petras, Madonna, Let's Eat Grandma, and Namie Amuro. Sophie's music is deeply rooted in underground dance styles, drawing inspiration from her early days of attending raves and listening to electronic music.
Sophie's influential work expanded the scope of modern pop music, earning her recognition from esteemed publications such as The Fader and Pitchfork. Her vibrant electronic productions molded electronic music into bracingly original avant-garde pop.
Sophie was a private individual who later came out as transgender. Tragically, Sophie passed away on 30 January 2021 after an accidental fall in Athens.
"My dad had brilliant instincts, taking me to raves when I was very young. He bought me the rave cassette tapes before I went to the events and would play them in the car and be like, 'This is going to be important for you.'" - Sophie in an interview with Lenny Letter
Sophie's music embodied a philosophy of experimentation and boldness, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in pop music. Her work continues to inspire a new generation of musicians and producers.
