Born Joshua Howard Luellen on February 2, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia, Southside was raised in the Southeast section of the city. Growing up, he played Little League Baseball but gave up the sport after suffering a concussion when he was hit in the head with a ball. It was during his teenage years that Southside discovered his passion for music production, starting to make beats at just 14 years old when he got his first computer from his uncle.
Southside's big break came when he was discovered by rapper Waka Flocka Flame at the age of 17. Through Waka's connection with Gucci Mane, Luellen was signed to 1017 Records. At the label, he met Lex Luger, a fellow producer, and the two laid the production groundwork for Waka Flocka's debut album, Flockaveli (2010).
