The brothers worked hard, taking on jobs as busboys and bartenders in downtown hotels, and by 1914, they had saved $3,500. They partnered with two other Greeks to construct a modest nickelodeon, which they called the Olympia, and soon acquired other theaters.
In 1924, the Skouras Brothers Co. of St. Louis was incorporated with $400,000 capital stock, and by then, they owned over thirty local theaters. The pinnacle of their success came in 1926 with the opening of the $5.5 million Ambassador Theatre Building, a world-class movie palace in downtown St. Louis.
Following the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the brothers sold their interest to Warner Brothers and moved east, securing executive positions in the industry. This marked the beginning of Spyros Skouras' journey to the top of the film industry.
In 1942, Skouras became the president of 20th Century Fox, a position he held for twenty years. During his tenure, he oversaw the production of several epic films, including the iconic Cleopatra (1963), starring Elizabeth Taylor.
