Figure skater turned meteorologist who won multiple national championships and now forecasts the weather on TV. She's a rare example of a successful athlete turned scientist.
Stacey Pensgen is a name synonymous with excellence in figure skating, having won the silver medal at the prestigious 2000 Four Continents Championships. Today, she is equally recognized for her exceptional skills as a meteorologist, serving as the evening meteorologist for WHECTV News10NBC in Rochester, New York.
Born on May 25, 1982, in Fairport, New York, Pensgen's journey began with gymnastics at the tender age of three. She trained until she was fifteen and even became a regional champion in 1994 and 1995.
Pensgen attended Lahser High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and later pursued her education at Oakland Community College and the University of Colorado. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from SUNY Brockport in 2007.
Pensgen's fascination with figure skating began at the age of six, inspired by watching the sport on television. She started training under coach Richard Callaghan at the Onyx in Rochester and later worked with Mitch Moyer at the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Representing the Genesee Figure Skating Club, Pensgen won the bronze medal at the 1999 ISU Junior Grand Prix in Canada and the silver medal at the 2000 Four Continents Championships. Her highest placement at the U.S. Championships was sixth in 2000.
In addition to her single skating career, Pensgen also explored pair skating. She initially skated with her brother, Nathan Pensgen, and later teamed up with Derek Trent, placing 14th at the 2003 U.S. Championships.
In 2006, Pensgen joined 13 WHAM TV as a part-time meteorologist and reporter. She worked with the channel until 2011, when she moved to WROCTV News 8 as a weekend meteorologist. Today, she is an integral part of the WHECTV News10NBC team, bringing her expertise in meteorology to the screen every evening.
While Pensgen's impressive figure skating career and meteorology expertise are well-known, she has not received specific awards or recognition. However, her dedication to her craft and her ability to transition seamlessly between two demanding careers are a testament to her exceptional skills and perseverance.
Pensgen's personal life has been marked by her passion for sports and her commitment to education. Her journey from figure skater to meteorologist is an inspiring tale of hard work, adaptability, and a desire to continually challenge herself.
As she continues to shine in her role as evening meteorologist for WHECTV News10NBC, Stacey Pensgen remains an inspiration to anyone looking to pursue their passions, no matter how diverse they may be.
