Stefan Olsdal is a Swedish-Luxembourgish musician, best known as the bassist and guitarist of the alternative rock band Placebo. With a career spanning over two decades, he has also ventured into electronic music with his side project Digital 21+, showcasing his versatility as a musician.
Born on March 31, 1974, in Gothenburg, Sweden, Olsdal's family moved to Luxembourg when he was young. He attended the American International School of Luxembourg, where he met his future bandmate Brian Molko, although they didn't collaborate until later.
Olsdal started playing music in his school's orchestra in 1987. After completing his high school education in Sweden, he moved to London in 1993 to attend the Musicians Institute.
In 1994, Olsdal met Molko by chance outside South Kensington tube station, and they formed the lo-fi duo Ashtray Heart, playing on toy instruments. They wrote four songs before deciding to form a serious band, which eventually became Placebo. With the addition of Robert Schultzberg as their drummer, the trio started performing and recording music.
In addition to his work with Placebo, Olsdal has also explored electronic music with his side project Digital 21+. He has released music, remixed tracks, and collaborated with other artists, showcasing his diversity as a musician.
Olsdal has worked as a producer, arranger, musician, and mixer on various projects, including the EP El Encanto of Lantana and the album Canciones Para Robots Romanticos by Fangoria. He has also produced music for Lantana and worked on the debut album Inside from Digital 21+.
