Renowned for his significant contributions to Scottish law, Stephen Woolman, Lord Woolman, is a distinguished legal academic, judge, and Senator of the College of Justice. His seminal work, "Woolman on Contract," has become a cornerstone of contract law in Scotland, with six editions published since its initial release in 1987.
Lord Woolman was born on May 16, 1953, in Scotland. He received his education from George Heriot's School in Edinburgh and later graduated with a law degree from the University of Aberdeen.
Woolman's illustrious legal career spanned over four decades. He began as a lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Edinburgh (1978-1987) and served as Associate Dean from 1981 to 1984. He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1987, the same year he published the first edition of "Woolman on Contract."
Notable appointments include Standing Junior Counsel to the Office of Fair Trading (1991-1995), the Procurement Executive of the Ministry of Defence (1991-1995), and the Inland Revenue (1996-1998). He was appointed Queens Counsel in 1998 and served as Advocate Depute from 1999 to 2002.
In 2008, Woolman was appointed Senator of the College of Justice, a judge of the High Court of Justiciary and Court of Session, taking the title Lord Woolman. He sat in the Inner House of the Court of Session and served as President of the Scottish Tribunals.
Woolman's magnum opus, "Woolman on Contract," has been widely acclaimed and has undergone six editions, with the latest published in 2018. He holds an honorary LLD from the University of Aberdeen and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2022.
