In 1995, John moved to the United States to attend Mercer County Community College in New Jersey, where he was recruited by the college's head coach, Charlie Inverso. During his time at Mercer, John led the Vikings to the 1995 NJCAA soccer championship, scoring an impressive 27 goals, including one in the final against Yavapai College.
John's professional debut came in April 1997 with the Carolina Dynamo of the A-League, the second division of U.S. club soccer, while on loan from the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association. Although his stint with Carolina was brief, scoring no goals in five appearances, he soon found success with the New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers, netting 16 goals in 21 appearances and earning the Rookie of the Year title.
