Steve Byrnes was an American television announcer and producer, best known for his work in auto racing, particularly in NASCAR. With a career spanning over three decades, Byrnes became a household name in the racing community, covering numerous NASCAR events and eventually hosting Speed's studio show, NASCAR Race Hub.
Byrnes was born on April 14, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in New Carrollton, Maryland. He was the eldest of five siblings and graduated from Largo High School in 1977, where he was an accomplished athlete, playing quarterback on the football team and pitcher on the baseball team. He then attended the University of Maryland, graduating in 1981 with a degree in radio, television, and film. During his senior year, Byrnes interned at WJLA in nearby Washington, D.C., gaining valuable experience in the television industry.
Byrnes began his television career shortly after graduating from college, working as a weekend sports producer, covering the Washington Redskins, Washington Bullets, Maryland, Georgetown, the Baltimore Orioles, and other sports. In 1982, he landed his first on-air personality job at WCIV in Sullivans Island, South Carolina, serving as a sports reporter and weekend anchor for the NBC affiliate.
In 1985, Byrnes made the transition to auto racing, hosting the NASCAR newsmagazine Inside Winston Cup with Ned Jarrett. He went on to work for various networks, including TBS, TNN (now Paramount Network), and CBS, covering numerous NASCAR events and announcing pit road action for World Sports Enterprises.
In 2001, Byrnes joined NASCAR on Fox as a pit reporter and later became the host of NASCAR Race Hub on Speed. He became known for his enthusiastic and knowledgeable commentary, earning the respect of drivers, crew chiefs, and fans alike.
In 2014, Byrnes took a medical leave of absence from Fox Sports after being diagnosed with a recurrence of head and neck cancer. Tragically, he passed away on April 21, 2015, at the age of 56, leaving behind a legacy in the racing community.
