Steve Hanley, the Irish-born English musician, is best known for his iconic basslines as a member of the influential post-punk band The Fall, from 1979 to 1998. His distinctive and muscular playing style was a hallmark of the band's sound, often carrying the instrumental melodies and earning him a reputation as one of the preeminent Manchester bassists of his generation.
Before joining The Fall, Hanley played in the Sirens alongside Marc Riley and Craig Scanlon in 1978. When Riley left to join The Fall, they became Staff 9, but disbanded when Hanley and Scanlon joined The Fall themselves in 1979. During this period, Hanley's brother Paul was also a member of the band, playing drums and keyboards.
Hanley's basslines were a defining feature of The Fall's sound, with Mark E. Smith, the band's lead vocalist, stating in a late 80s interview that Hanley was the most original aspect of the band, and that he was "The Fall sound". Hanley co-wrote the music for over 100 Fall songs, including tracks such as "Rowche Rumble", "Fiery Jack", "Container Drivers", and "Totally Wired". He has mentioned that his part on the "This Nation's Saving Grace" track "My New House" is the bassline he is most proud of.
After leaving The Fall in 1998, Hanley went on to pursue other musical projects. He is currently a member of Brix and the Extricated, alongside guitarist and vocalist Brix Smith. He also plays bass with The House Of All, a band consisting of other ex-Fall members, whose debut album was released in January 2023 to widespread acclaim.
In 2014, Hanley published his autobiography, "The Big Midweek: Life Inside The Fall", which was met with critical acclaim for its frank honesty and dry, no-nonsense humor.
Steve Hanley's contributions to The Fall's sound and legacy have been immense, and his influence can be heard in many post-punk and indie bands that followed.
