Steve Nicol is widely regarded as one of the most successful and decorated Scottish footballers of all time, with a storied playing career that spanned over two decades and included numerous accolades with Liverpool and the Scotland national team. As a right-back, Nicol was an integral part of Liverpool's dominant squad of the 1980s, winning five English league championships, three FA Cup winners' medals, and the 1984 European Cup.
Nicol was born on December 11, 1961, in Troon, Scotland. He began his footballing journey with local club Troon Thistle at the age of nine before joining Ayr United's youth academy at 16. Nicol made his professional debut for Ayr United in 1979 and went on to make 70 league appearances for the Scottish side before being signed by Liverpool manager Bob Paisley in 1981.
Nicol's move to Anfield marked the beginning of a highly successful chapter in his career. Although he had to wait almost a year to make his senior debut for Liverpool, he eventually became a regular in the team under manager Joe Fagan. During his 14-year tenure with the Reds, Nicol won numerous honors, including five English league championships, three FA Cup winners' medals, and the 1984 European Cup. He made over 400 appearances for the club, scoring 46 goals in the process.
Nicol was a regular member of the Scotland national team, earning 27 caps between 1984 and 1992. He represented his country at the 1986 FIFA World Cup, where Scotland was eliminated in the group stages.
After leaving Liverpool in 1994, Nicol played for several English teams, including Notts County, Sheffield Wednesday, and Doncaster Rovers. He eventually emigrated to the United States in 1999, where he began his coaching career. Nicol coached the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer (MLS) from 2002 to 2011, becoming the longest-tenured head coach in MLS history. He is currently a commentator for ESPN FC.
