Steven Naismith is a Scottish professional football coach and former player, renowned for his exceptional skills on the field and his current role as the head coach of Scottish Premiership club Heart of Midlothian. Born on September 14, 1986, in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Naismith grew up in nearby Stewarton in East Ayrshire. Despite struggling with dyslexia, he didn't let it hold him back, and his passion for football drove him to pursue his dreams. Naismith played for local boys club team Stewarton Annick before joining the Rangers youth team as a youngster.
Naismith signed professionally with Kilmarnock in August 2002, making his senior debut in the 2003-04 season as a substitute against Hibernian. During his time with Kilmarnock, he won the SFWA Young Player of the Year award in 2006 and the SPFA Young Player of the Year award in 2007.
In 2007, Naismith joined Rangers for £1.9 million, where he won three consecutive league titles, the Scottish Cup in 2009, and the League Cup twice. His impressive performance earned him a move to Premier League club Everton in 2012.
In 2016, Naismith signed with Norwich City, before joining Heart of Midlothian on two separate loan spells. He eventually signed permanently with Hearts in 2019, after being released by Norwich. Naismith's experience with Hearts paved the way for his current role as the head coach of the Scottish Premiership club.
Naismith made his senior international debut for Scotland in 2007, going on to earn 51 caps and scoring ten international goals. He mainly played as a forward but was also used as a midfielder. After retiring from playing in 2021, Naismith took a coaching position at Hearts, becoming the interim manager in April 2023 and eventually the permanent head coach two months later.
Naismith has been an ambassador for the Dyslexia Scotland charity, using his platform to raise awareness and support for individuals with dyslexia.
