A versatile musician and composer, known for blending folk, jazz, and rock elements, creating a unique sound that has captivated audiences worldwide.
Multi-instrumentalist, entertainer, and visionary, Stian Carstensen is renowned for his captivating fusion of Balkan folk, jazz, and rock music. As a central member of the acclaimed Balkan jazz orchestra, Farmers Market, Carstensen has been instrumental in crafting a unique sound that has captivated audiences worldwide.
Born on January 5, 1971, in Eidsvoll, Norway, Carstensen's musical journey began at the tender age of nine, when he started playing the accordion under the guidance of his father. He later honed his skills with a classical player, attending lessons for four years. During this period, he made appearances on Norwegian TV, radio, and festivals, while also touring in America, playing classical music.
At 15, Carstensen's interests shifted to swing jazz, and he began playing standard tunes with his father, who was also a bass player. He then formed a rock band and played electric guitar, only to resume his passion for jazz later on. This led him to form a trio with local artists, and eventually, he enrolled in the Jazz Program at the Trondheim Musikkonservatorium, with guitar as his main instrument.
During his two-year study in Trondheim (1991-1993), Carstensen co-founded Farmers Market, initially a free jazz quintet. However, a chance encounter with Bulgarian folk music changed the course of the band's trajectory. They became enamored with the complex, asymmetrical rhythms and melodies of Balkan folk, and their music took on a new dimension.
Carstensen's fascination with Bulgarian folk led him to travel to Bulgaria, where he immersed himself in the local music scene, collecting and studying the traditional tunes. This experience culminated in the live record, Speed/Balkan/Boogie, featuring singers and musicians from the legendary Le Mystères des Voix Bulgares, recorded at the Molde International Jazz Festival in Norway.
Since then, Carstensen has been deeply committed to Balkan jazz, touring extensively with musicians from Bulgaria and Romania, learning from them, and absorbing their musical traditions. His diverse musical palette has also led him to explore composition, playing the 5-string banjo in bluegrass style, and experimenting with jazz groups in bebop and experimental styles, including collaborations with the renowned Jon Christensen.
Stian Carstensen's innovative approach to Balkan jazz has not only redefined the genre but has also inspired a new generation of musicians. His tireless efforts to promote and preserve traditional folk music have earned him a revered position in the global music community.
Through his exceptional talent, dedication, and passion, Carstensen has created a distinctive sound that continues to captivate audiences, blurring the boundaries between folk, jazz, and rock music.
