Born on August 1, 1985, in Cults, Aberdeen, Scotland, Holden moved to Sugar Land, Texas, with his family at the age of 10. His father worked for Chevron Corporation in its human resources department. Holden developed a passion for soccer in his early years and played for Awty International School in Houston. He graduated in 2003 and attended Clemson University, where he played soccer and also dabbled in professional CounterStrike.
After two seasons of college soccer at Clemson University, Holden signed with English club Sunderland in early 2005. However, his time with the club was marred by an incident in which he was attacked outside a bar in Newcastle, leaving him with a fractured left eye socket. The injury forced him to take a two-month break from training.
Holden's big break came when he joined the Houston Dynamo in 2006. During his time with the club, he made 88 appearances and scored 15 goals. His impressive performance earned him a spot in the MLS Best XI in 2009.
