Susan Friedlander was born on January 26, 1946. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from University College, London in 1967. Her academic excellence earned her a Kennedy Scholarship, which enabled her to pursue a Master of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1970. Friedlander then went on to complete her doctorate in 1972 from Princeton University under the supervision of Louis Norberg Howard.
Friedlander's academic journey began with a stint as a Visiting Member at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences from 1972 to 1974, followed by a year as an instructor at Princeton University. In 1975, she joined the faculty in the Mathematics department at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she remained until 2007. Friedlander then moved to the University of Southern California, where she currently serves as Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Center for Applied Mathematical Sciences.
