Unified Burma under a single rule, expanded the empire, and promoted Theravada Buddhism. Known for military conquests and cultural achievements.
Tabinshwehti, a Burmese king who reigned from 1530 to 1550, is renowned for founding the First Toungoo Empire, the largest kingdom in Burma since the fall of the Pagan Empire in 1287. His military campaigns from 1534 to 1549 expanded his kingdom, making him one of the most celebrated kings in Burmese history.
Tabinshwehti was born on April 16, 1516, at Toungoo Palace to King Mingyi Nyo of Toungoo and his concubine Khin Oo. His father, who had desperately wanted a son, named the baby boy Tabinshwehti, meaning "Unitary Golden Umbrella."
Based out of their small landlocked principality in the Sittaung valley, Tabinshwehti and his deputy Bayinnaung began their military campaigns in 1534 against the Hanthawaddy Kingdom. By 1541, they had conquered the wealthier but disunited kingdom, leveraging its wealth, manpower, and access to Portuguese mercenaries and firearms.
Tabinshwehti's military campaigns extended his rule to the ancient capital of Pagan (Bagan) in 1544. Although his attempts to build an East-West empire fell short in Arakan (1545-1547) and Siam (1547-1549), his conquests led to the reunification of the entire country.
Tabinshwehti actively courted the support of ethnic Mons of Lower Burma, many of whom were appointed to the highest positions in his government and armed forces. His chief queen and chief primate were Mons, and he moved the capital to Pegu (Bago).
Tabinshwehti's premature death on his 34th birthday, allegedly on the orders of Smim Sawhtut, one of his close advisers, has been called one of the great turning points of mainland Southeast Asia's history. The kingdom he had built up fell apart right after his death, but his brother-in-law Bayinnaung restored it in the next two years.
Tabinshwehti is revered as one of the most celebrated kings in Burmese history. The Tabinshwehti nat is one of the 37 nats (spirits) worshiped in Myanmar. His legacy has endured, inspiring generations of Burmese leaders and people.
Tabinshwehti's remarkable achievements have left an indelible mark on Burmese history, and his legacy continues to inspire and fascinate people to this day.
