Japanese singer-songwriter and bass player behind influential rock band Plastics, known for quirky, new wave-inspired sound and hits like "Top Secret Man".
When it comes to Japanese music, few names evoke the same level of excitement and innovation as Takeshi Ueda, the bassist, programmer, additional vocalist, and songwriter for the iconic band The Mad Capsule Markets. Known for his unique and ever-evolving style of bass guitar playing, Ueda has left an indelible mark on the music industry.
Born on August 25, 1968, in Yokohama, Japan, Ueda's early life remains somewhat of a mystery. What is known, however, is that he was heavily influenced by the pioneering Japanese band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) and joined the pre-Mad Capsule Markets band Berrie in 1985.
Ueda's journey with The Mad Capsule Markets began in the late 1980s, and his style of bass guitar playing underwent a significant transformation over the years. From the early days of punk-infused bass lines to experimenting with tuning down his bass for a more RapMetal effect, Ueda's versatility and creativity have been the hallmark of the band's sound.
With the departure of lead guitarist Ai Ishigaki in 1996, Ueda's bass became the central element of the band's music, and his experimentation with guitar, synthesizer, and effects pedals took center stage. His ability to master a wide range of instruments and styles has drawn comparisons to the likes of Tom Morello.
Ueda has adopted various pseudonyms throughout his career, including Kure Takeshi, Kurejii Takeshi, Cra, and Takeshi Ueda. His work with The Mad Capsule Markets has been complemented by side projects, such as his clothing line Fuzz Rez Zweep, and his involvement with the band AA, which he founded in 2009.
With AA, Ueda has released two albums, 1 and 2, and a live DVD, Tour 1. The band's music features a diverse range of styles, from rock to electronic to hip-hop, and has received critical acclaim. Ueda's work with AA showcases his boundless energy and creativity, solidifying his position as one of Japan's most innovative musicians.
Takeshi Ueda's influence on Japanese music and beyond is undeniable. His innovative approach to bass guitar playing, genre-bending style, and commitment to pushing boundaries have inspired countless musicians and fans alike. As The Mad Capsule Markets remains on hiatus, Ueda's continued work with AA and other projects ensures that his creative spirit will continue to shape the music landscape for years to come.
