Tanel Kangert is a name that echoes in the world of professional cycling, synonymous with grit, determination, and a never-give-up attitude. As a former road bicycle racer who competed at the highest level from 2008 to 2022, Kangert has etched his mark on the sport, leaving behind a legacy that inspires and motivates aspiring cyclists around the world.
Born on March 11, 1987, in Vändra, Estonia, Kangert's tryst with cycling began at a tender age. He attended kindergarten alongside fellow Estonian cyclist Rein Taaramäe, little knowing that their friendship would blossom into a lifelong passion for the sport.
Kangert's professional career took off in 2008 when he signed with Ag2r-La Mondiale, after impressing the team as a stagiaire in 2007. The same year, he clinched the Estonian National Time Trial Championships, setting the tone for a successful career.
However, Kangert's journey was not without its challenges. In 2008, he suffered from severe knee pain, requiring surgery to correct the issue. This setback forced him to take a break and race as an amateur in 2010. But Kangert refused to let adversity get the better of him.
In 2011, Kangert joined the Kazakh team Astana, marking a significant milestone in his career. He went on to win the final stage of the Tour de Suisse in 2012, outpacing Jrmy Roy in a thrilling sprint finish. The same year, he also secured the Estonian National Road Race Championships.
Kangert's impressive performances didn't go unnoticed, and he soon became an integral part of Vincenzo Nibali's support team in the 2013 Giro d'Italia. Despite finishing 14th overall, Kangert's selfless riding earned him a three-year contract extension with Astana.
In 2016, Kangert finished second in the Giro del Trentino, just two seconds behind Mikel Landa. He went on to win the Abu Dhabi Tour in the same year, cementing his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the cycling world.
In 2019, Kangert joined EF Education First, before moving to Team BikeExchange in 2021, where he played a crucial role in supporting Simon Yates.
Tanel Kangert's remarkable career serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication, perseverance, and passion for the sport. As he hangs up his cycling shoes, he leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations of cyclists to come.
