Telmo Zarra is renowned for being the top scorer in competitive matches for Athletic Bilbao, with an impressive 335 goals to his name. During his illustrious career, he scored a total of 251 league goals, a Spanish record that stood for nearly six decades before being broken by Lionel Messi.
Zarra was born on 20 January 1921 at the Asa train station in Erandio, Biscay. He was the seventh of ten children, and his family was of Romani descent. Growing up, Zarra would often play football with his neighbors, and his access to a real ball – courtesy of his brothers who played in La Liga – gave him an edge over his peers.
Zarra's talent and dedication earned him a spot at Erandio, where he played for one season before joining Athletic Bilbao in 1940. During his 15-year tenure at the club, he won the Pichichi Trophy as the highest scorer in La Liga on six occasions. His 81 goals in the Copa del Rey remain a record to this day.
Zarra played for Spain 20 times, scoring 20 goals, including four in one match as Spain beat Switzerland 6-3 on 18 February 1951. He also scored his country's winning goal against England in the 1950 World Cup finals, helping Spain reach the final four – their best performance in the competition until winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup 60 years later.
After leaving Athletic Bilbao in 1955, Zarra played for SD Indautxu and Barakaldo CF before retiring. He passed away on 23 February 2006, at the age of 85. In his memory, the Zarra Trophy is awarded to the highest-scoring Spaniard in La Liga.
