He attended school in Swansea, where he captained the Swansea Schoolboys team, which also boasted the talent of the great John Charles.
Medwin's professional journey began with his hometown club, Swansea Town, where he signed as an amateur in 1949. He made his senior team debut against Blackburn Rovers in January 1952, going on to make 147 league appearances for the Swans. In May 1956, Medwin made a milestone move to Tottenham Hotspur for £25,000, where he scored twice on his debut against Preston North End.
Medwin's international debut came in April 1953, in a 3-2 away victory against Ireland. He went on to represent Wales in the 1958 FIFA World Cup, featuring in four out of five games, including the iconic 2-1 playoff against Hungary, where he scored the game-winning goal that propelled Wales to the quarterfinals.
With 30 caps and six goals to his name, Medwin remains the last player to score for Wales in the finals of a major tournament, until Gareth Bale's strike in Wales' opening game of UEFA Euro 2016.
After his playing career came to an abrupt end due to a broken leg sustained during a tour of South Africa in 1963, Medwin went on to manage Cheshunt.
