Tetsuya, born October 3, 1969, is a Japanese musician, singer-songwriter, and record producer, best known as the bassist and bandleader of the iconic rock band L'Arc-en-Ciel. With a career spanning over three decades, he has been instrumental in shaping the band's unique sound and style, which has earned them a loyal fan base and critical acclaim.
In February 1991, Tetsuya, then known as Tetsu, recruited vocalist Hyde, guitarist Hiro, and drummer Pero to form L'Arc-en-Ciel. The band's early days were marked by a series of lineup changes, with Hiro leaving in 1992 and Pero departing on December 30, 1992. Tetsuya convinced his friend Ken to join the band as their guitarist, and Sakura later became the band's new drummer.
L'Arc-en-Ciel's debut album, Dune, was released on April 1, 1993, on the independent record label Danger Crue Records. The album's success caught the attention of major labels, and the band signed with Sony Music Entertainment Japan's Ki/oon division in 1994. Their major debut album, Tierra, was released the same year, followed by Heavenly in 1995.
The band's fourth album, True, released in 1996, became their first number one record on the Oricon Albums Chart and sold over a million copies. However, Sakura's arrest for drug possession in early 1997 led to a brief hiatus. The band resumed activities as a trio with the October 1997 release of the single Niji.
In 2001, Tetsuya started his solo career under the name Tetsu69. He has released several solo albums and singles, showcasing his versatility as a musician. From 2005 to 2006, he was a support member of Morrie's solo project Creature Creature. In 2023, he formed a L'Arc-en-Ciel cover band named Like an Angel.
