Australian Music Icon
Tex Perkins, born Gregory
Stephen Perkins on December 28, 1964, is an Australian singer-songwriter renowned for fronting the critically acclaimed rock band The Cruel Sea. Additionally, he has had successful stints with various other bands, including the Beasts of Bourbon, Thug,
James Baker Experience, The Butcher Shop, Salamander Jim, and Tex, Don and Charlie.
Early Career and Formative Years
Perkins embarked on his musical journey in the 1980s with Brisbane-based cowpunk outfit Tex Deadly and the DumDums. Following the band's dissolution, he relocated to Sydney in 1982, where he quickly garnered attention in the independent music scene. Perkins' early years were marked by frequent touring, including stints in Melbourne, before the departure of guitarist Mark Halstead led to the band's eventual breakup.
Salamander Jim and Thug
Perkins went on to form Salamander Jim with Kim Salmon from The Scientists and Richard Ploog from The Church. However, due to touring commitments, Perkins formed a different lineup with Stu Spasm, Lachlan McLeod, and Martin Bland. This iteration of the band recorded and released their only record, the EP titled
Lorne Greene Shares His Precious Fluids, on Red Eye Records in 1985.
In 1987, Perkins co-founded Thug with Peter Read in Sydney. Thug's live performances were characterized by their brevity, typically lasting between 20 to 25 minutes, and featured dancers and theatrics. The band released two studio albums,
Mechanical Ape and
Proud Idiots Parade in 1987, followed by
Electric Woolly Mammoth in 1988.
Beasts of Bourbon
One of Perkins' most notable associations is with the Beasts of Bourbon, which formed in Sydney in 1983. The original lineup comprised Perkins, Spencer P. Jones, James Baker, Kim Salmon, and Boris Sudjovic. Although initially a side project, the band's first album,
The Axeman's Jazz, was an underground success. It wasn't until 1988 that the band reformed to record
Sour Mash, which marked the beginning of a more committed effort.
Solo Career and Collaborations
In addition to his work with various bands, Perkins has released several solo records, showcasing his versatility as a singer-songwriter. He has also collaborated with other notable artists, including Tex, Don and Charlie, a project that brings together Perkins, Don Walker, and Charlie Owen.

Perkins' contributions to the Australian music scene have been acknowledged through various accolades. In 1997, a portrait of Perkins by artist Bill Leak won the Packing Room award at the prestigious Archibald Prize.
