A Japanese professional wrestler turned politician, known for his high-flying moves and charismatic persona, who later transitioned to politics, serving in the Iwate Prefectural Assembly.
The Great Sasuke, born Masanori Murakawa, is a Japanese professional wrestler, promoter, and politician renowned for his incredible tolerance for pain and his contributions to the world of professional wrestling. As the founder of Michinoku Pro Wrestling, he has made a lasting impact on the sport, inspiring generations of wrestlers to follow in his footsteps.
Born on July 18, 1969, Masanori Murakawa's journey into professional wrestling began when he failed to gain entrance to New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). Undeterred, he joined Universal Lucha Libre in 1990, adopting the ring name Masa Michinoku. His early career was marked by a Japanese folkloric gimmick, complete with a cloak and sandogasa hat, which he later traded for a white endan gakuran when wrestling abroad.
During a tour in Mexico with Universal Wrestling Association, Murakawa adopted the character of Ninja Sasuke, a ninja-inspired gimmick inspired by the legendary Sarutobi Sasuke. This marked a significant turning point in his career, as he began to wear a black bodysuit and lucha libre mask, incorporating martial arts into his wrestling style. Upon his return to Japan, he tweaked his name to The Great Sasuke, donning a distinctive red, black, and white mask patterned after kumadori makeup.
In 1993, The Great Sasuke founded Michinoku Pro Wrestling (MPW), a professional wrestling promotion based in Tohoku, Japan. Initially conceived as a branch of Universal Lucha Libre, MPW has grown to become a prominent force in Japanese professional wrestling, showcasing a unique blend of lucha libre, martial arts, and strong style wrestling.
The Great Sasuke's career has been marked by numerous injuries, including two cracked skulls, which have earned him a reputation for his incredible pain tolerance. Despite these setbacks, he has continued to push the limits of human endurance, inspiring a generation of wrestlers with his unyielding spirit.
Beyond his achievements in professional wrestling, The Great Sasuke has also made a mark in the world of politics, serving as a legislator in the Iwate Prefectural Assembly. His legacy extends far beyond the ring, as he has paved the way for future generations of Japanese professional wrestlers and inspired countless fans around the world.
The Great Sasuke's impact on professional wrestling is undeniable, and his contributions to the sport continue to be felt to this day. As a pioneer, promoter, and performer, he has left an indelible mark on the world of professional wrestling, inspiring generations to come.
