A former NHL player and Stanley Cup champion, known for overcoming a troubled childhood and addiction to achieve hockey success.
Theoren Fleury is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player, author, and motivational speaker, best known for his impressive career in the National Hockey League (NHL) and his inspiring story of overcoming addiction and personal struggles. With over 1,000 games played and a Stanley Cup win under his belt, Fleury's determination and perseverance have made him a beloved figure in the hockey world.
Fleury was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 8th round, 166th overall, at the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Despite being one of the smallest players of his generation, Fleury's physical style of play often led to altercations on the ice. As a junior, he was at the centre of the infamous "Punch-up in Piestany," a brawl that resulted in the disqualification of both Canada and the Soviet Union from the 1987 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
Despite being considered unlikely to play in the NHL due to his small size, Fleury went on to score over 1,000 points in his career, placing him 61st in career NHL scoring. He recorded 90 points four times and 100 points twice, and twice represented Canada at the Winter Olympics, winning a gold medal in 2002.
Throughout his career, Fleury battled drug and alcohol addictions that ultimately forced him out of the NHL in 2003. However, he refused to let his personal struggles define him. He went on to operate a concrete business in Calgary with his family and filmed a pilot for a reality television show about it. He also marketed his own brand of clothing, which led him to play two professional baseball games for the Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League.
In 1995, Fleury was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, and his annual charity golf tournament has helped raise over $1 million for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada. His dedication to giving back to the community is a testament to his character and commitment to making a positive impact.
Fleury's story is one of redemption and resilience. From overcoming addiction to finding success in business and philanthropy, he has become an inspiration to many. His determination and perseverance serve as a reminder that no matter what life throws our way, we always have the power to choose our path and make a positive impact on the world.
