Thomas Lennon is an American actor, comedian, screenwriter, producer, director, and novelist, best known for his iconic role as Lieutenant Jim Dangle in the hit Comedy Central series Reno 911!. Alongside his writing partner Robert Ben Garant, Lennon has penned several major studio comedies, including the Night at the Museum films, The Pacifier, Balls of Fury, and Baywatch.
Born on August 9, 1970, in Oak Park, Illinois, Lennon is of Irish and Scottish descent. He is the son of Kathleen (née McSheehy) and Timothy Lennon. Lennon graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 1988 and later attended New York University, where he joined a comedy troupe called The New Group.
As a member of The New Group, Lennon performed at theaters and clubs in New York City and worked on the MTV show You Wrote It, You Watch It. This led to the self-titled series The State (1993-1995), which was nominated for a 1995 Cable Ace Award for Best Comedy Series. The State's unique brand of absurdist humor and witty sketches caught the attention of audiences and critics alike, establishing Lennon as a rising star in the comedy world.
Following the departure of The State from MTV, Lennon, along with Kerri Kenney, Robert Ben Garant, and Michael Ian Black, created and starred in the Comedy Central program Viva Variety (1997-1999). After Viva Variety, Lennon, Kenney, and Garant created and starred in Reno 911! (2003-2009), a series that initially began as a rejected pilot for Fox but eventually found a home on Comedy Central.
