Born on January 18, 1888, in Kensington, London, Thomas Sopwith was the eighth child and only son of Thomas Sopwith, a civil engineer, and his wife, Lydia Gertrude Messiter. His early life was marked by tragedy when, at the age of ten, he witnessed the accidental shooting death of his father during a family holiday in Scotland.
Despite this traumatic event, Sopwith went on to develop a passion for motorized vehicles, participating in the 100-mile Tricar trial in 1904 and later becoming interested in ballooning. He took his first flight in 1906 in a balloon owned by C.S. Rolls, which would eventually lead him to pursue a career in aviation.
Sopwith's fascination with flying led him to take flying lessons and eventually earn his pilot's license in 1910. In 1936, Sopwith was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to aviation. He continued to be involved in the aviation industry, serving as a consultant to the Ministry of Aircraft Production during World War II.
