Conway's breakthrough role came in 1962 when he played the inept Ensign Parker in the World War II TV situation comedy McHale's Navy. This role earned him a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. In addition, he played the title character in eight Dorf films from 1987 to 1996 and voiced Barnacle Boy in the animated TV series SpongeBob SquarePants from 1999 to 2012.
