A renowned musician and songwriter, he is best known for his work with Split Enz and Crowded House, crafting catchy and introspective pop-rock anthems.
Tim Finn is a New Zealand singer, songwriter, musician, and composer, best known as a founding member of Split Enz and his work with Crowded House. With a career spanning over four decades, he has written some of the most iconic songs in Australian and New Zealand music history, including "I See Red" and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" with Split Enz, and "Four Seasons in a Day" and "Weather with You" with Crowded House.
Born on June 25, 1952, in Te Awamutu, New Zealand, Tim Finn grew up in a musical family. He was the eldest of four children, including his younger brother Neil Finn, who would later join him in his musical ventures. Tim attended Sacred Heart College, Auckland, a Catholic boarding school, on a scholarship, where he developed his passion for music.
In 1971, Tim commenced a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Auckland, but soon, music became more important to him than his studies. He played in music practice room 129 (which would later become the name of a Split Enz song) with friends and future band members Mike Chunn, Robert Gillies, Philip Judd, and Noel Crombie. This marked the birth of Split Enz, one of the most influential bands to come out of New Zealand.
In the early 1980s, while still a member of Split Enz, Tim began a solo career, scoring hits with "Fraction Too Much Friction" and "Made My Day". He left Split Enz in 1984, briefly returning for their farewell tour later that year. Tim has since collaborated with various artists, including former Split Enz members, and has also composed scores for films and musicals.
In the 1990s, Tim reunited with his brother Neil and formed the Finn Brothers, releasing several albums together. He also joined Crowded House for their third album Woodface, co-writing the majority of the songs on the album, including the hits "Four Seasons in a Leaky Boat" and "Weather with You".
Tim Finn has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. Along with his brother Neil, he was appointed Officer of the Order of British Empire in 1993 for his services to music.
Through his music, Tim Finn has always expressed a sense of social consciousness and environmental awareness. His songs often touch on themes of love, relationships, and social issues, reflecting his humanitarian and philosophical beliefs.
Tim Finn's music has had a profound impact on modern society, inspiring generations of musicians and fans alike. His songs have become anthems for New Zealand and Australian music, and his collaborations with Crowded House have helped shape the sound of alternative rock music.
Through his music and philanthropic work, Tim Finn has left a lasting legacy, cementing his place as one of the most influential and respected musicians to come out of New Zealand.
