Tirunesh began competing in athletics at the tender age of 14 and quickly made a name for herself on the national and international circuits. Her breakthrough came in 2003 when she won the World Championship title at just 18 years and 90 days old, becoming the youngest World Champion in history.
In 2005, Tirunesh made history by becoming the first woman to win the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters events at the same World Championship in Helsinki, Finland.
