In 1932, he moved to Rome to train under the celebrated Italian tenor, Giulio Crimi.
Gobbi made his operatic debut in 1935 as Count Rodolfo in Bellini's La sonnambula in Gubbio, Italy. His early years saw him performing in Italy's major opera houses, and he quickly gained recognition for his versatility and vocal range.

Gobbi's brother-in-law was the famous Bulgarian-born bass, Boris Christoff, with whom he often shared the stage at Covent Garden.
