Born on March 30, 1970, in Kentish Town, North London, Hill's early life was steeped in literary heritage. His maternal grandfather, Gottfried Bermann, was a confidant of Thomas Mann and the owner of S. Fischer Verlag, Germany's leading publisher-in-exile during World War II. This rich cultural background instilled in Hill a deep appreciation for language and storytelling.
Hill's writing career began with poetry, publishing his early work in magazines such as Envoi and The Frogmore Papers. He went on to release four critically acclaimed poetry collections: Year of the Dog (1995), Midnight in the City of Clocks (1996), Zoo (1998), and Nocturne in Chrome & Sunset Yellow (2006). The latter was hailed by The Guardian as "a vital, luminous collection... it is rare to come across a collection of poetry that you know with certainty you will still be reading years from now."
Hill's short story collection, Skin (1997), was shortlisted for the John Llewellyn Rhys/Mail on Sunday Prize and won the International PEN/Macmillan Silver Pen Award. His debut novel, Underground (1999), set on the London Underground, won the Betty Trask Prize and the Arts Council Writers Award. Hill's second novel, The Love of Stones (2001), cemented his reputation as a masterful storyteller.
Hill married Hannah Donat in 2003, and they had one child, Kit. In 2014, he suffered a stroke, which unfortunately ended his writing career. Hill passed away on August 26, 2023, at the age of 53, leaving behind a legacy of words that will continue to captivate and inspire generations to come.
