In 2007, Lickliter became the head coach at Butler University, leading the team to a 39-28 record over two seasons. He then moved on to become the head coach at the University of Iowa, where he spent three seasons. In 2011, he became the head coach at Marian University, leading the team to a 22-10 record in his first season.

In 2012, Lickliter joined the staff at Miami (Ohio) as an assistant coach, spending one season with the team. In 2018, he became the head coach at Evansville, leading the Purple Aces men's basketball team in the Missouri Valley Conference.
